Air emissions - particulates (PM10)

AGL Loy Yang emissions decreased 6%. Emissions are split roughly evenly between point source and fugitive sources. Point source emissions have decreased due to the decrease in coal combustion (down 9%) and total electricity generation (down 8%). Fugitive emissions include dust emissions and exhaust emissions from vehicles and equipment, and there was little change from FY22.

Bayswater Power Station emissions increased 6%. Emissions are split roughly 25/75 between point source and fugitive sources. Point source emissions, which are calculated using PM10 measured via stack tests and gas flow, increased 34%, while fugitive emissions decreased 4%.

Liddell Power Station emissions decreased 23%. Point source emissions are calculated using PM10 measured via stack tests and total gas flow allocated to each unit. The decrease in point source emissions can be attributed to lower measurements of PM10 in stack test results and decrease in operating hours. There was little change in fugitive emissions since FY22.

AGL Torrens emissions decreased 25%. The decrease in emissions aligns with the overall decrease in pipeline natural gas combustion at Torrens Island and Barker Inlet power stations (down 23%).

Notes

  • FY23 data was updated in November 2023. A subset of data (comprising emissions associated with the combustion of black coal at Bayswater and Liddell power stations, black and brown coal as well as natural gas at AGL Loy Yang Power Station, and gas and fuel oil at AGL Torrens Power Station) was reported with the initial release of the FY23 Data Centre on 10 August 2023.

  • For the purposes of this data set, AGL Torrens comprises the Torrens Island Power Station and the Barker Inlet Power Station which commenced operation in December 2019.

  • All figures have been rounded to the nearest kilogram.

  • Emissions from Kwinana Swift Power Station were included from FY20.

  • Air emissions data for AGL sites is publicly reported NPI data. See www.npi.gov.au/.

  • The emission factors used in AGL's NPI reports are sourced from relevant industry emission estimation technique manuals available on the NPI website.
