Air emissions - carbon monoxide (CO)

There was an overall decrease in carbon monoxide emissions from AGL's major operations (AGL Loy Yang, Bayswater Power Station, Liddell Power Station, and AGL Torrens) in FY23 compared to FY22.

AGL Loy Yang carbon monoxide emissions decreased 33% in FY23, following a general decreasing trend from FY20. The change in emissions is the result of more continuous and efficient coal combustion.

Bayswater Power Station carbon monoxide emissions decreased 5% in FY23. The observed decrease in emissions directly aligns with the decrease in sub-bituminous coal combustion (down 5%) and the decrease in total electricity generated (down 5%).

Liddell Power Station carbon monoxide emissions decreased 31% in FY23. Point source emissions are calculated using the total quantity of fuel combusted (sub-bituminous coal and diesel), and the application of industry emission factors. The observed decrease in emissions directly aligns with the decrease in sub-bituminous coal combustion (down 31%), and the decrease in total electricity generated (down 32%).

AGL Torrens carbon monoxide emissions decreased 9% in FY23. The observed decrease in carbon monoxide emissions is attributable to the decrease in pipeline natural gas combustion at Torrens Island Power Station (down 29%) and increase in pipeline natural gas combustion at Barker Inlet Power Station (up 9%).

Newcastle Gas Storage Facility carbon monoxide emissions increased due to an increase in gas flaring activity during the period.

Silver Springs Oil and Gas Project carbon monoxide emissions increased in FY23 due to the increase in unprocessed natural gas combustion.

Notes

  • FY23 data was updated in November 2023. A subset of data (comprising emissions associated with the combustion of black coal at Bayswater and Liddell power stations, black and brown coal as well as natural gas at AGL Loy Yang Power Station, and gas and fuel oil at AGL Torrens Power Station) was reported with the initial release of the FY23 Data Centre on 10 August 2023.

  • For the purposes of this data set, AGL Torrens comprises the Torrens Island Power Station and the Barker Inlet Power Station, which commenced operation in December 2019.

  • All figures have been rounded to the nearest kilogram.

  • Emissions from Kwinana Power Station have been included from FY20.

  • Air emissions data for AGL sites is publicly reported NPI data. See www.npi.gov.au

  • The emission factors used in AGL's NPI reports are sourced from relevant industry emission estimation technique manuals available on the NPI website.
